In 1943 Bonhoeffer and his brother-in-law were charged with treason against the Nazi state for assisting Jews to escape to Switzerland. Two years later Hitler signed their execution order condemning them to die just before liberation of Germany by American forces. The reunification of Germany has given global impetus to reconsideration of Dietrick Bonhoeffer’s life and work.
