Free Summer Theater Events at The Four Arts!
“The Play’s the Thing” at The Society of the Four Arts King Library this summer, with a series of interactive theatre discussions and play readings just added to its summer schedule.
On Thursday, July 1 at 5:30 p.m. the King Library will showcase Color the Sky, a newly written play by Patrick Henry Flynn, directed by Barry Lewis. Formatted to be a unique workshop experience, the audience will be encouraged to make comments, critique actors and listen to the director’s feedback, as well as witness the development process of a new play.
Mr. Flynn has reviewed theater for the CITY PAPER (Boston), The Washington POST, and Miami NEW TIMES. He also headed Playwrights Platform in Boston.
On Thursday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m., audiences are invited to a performance of The Actor by Terry Hands featuring Barrie Ingham. The Actor has been described as “hilarious and profoundly moving entertainment” and will be performed by Barrie Ingham. The performance previously won Ingham the Australian Theatre Award. He has since towed the show world-wide to critical acclaim.
On Thursday, August 12 at 5:30 p.m., Barrie Ingham will return with “Love, Love, Love”. The play looks at the question “what is love?” asking the world’s finest and funniest authors the question. Barrie Ingham holds the record for the longest running solo presentation of this play at London’s Mermaid Theatre and has since toured the show throughout Australia, South Africa, Central America and the U.S.A.
Beginning on July 14, the King Library will give patrons a chance to get in on the fun with “Readers’ Theatre." This series will be a play-reading and discussion group that calls on participants to “be part of the drama.” The King Library’s own Elena Lanz will guide attendees as they read directly from the scripts, telling the story without props, costumes or sets. The plays to be read are as follows:
- July 14 at 5:30 p.m.: The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde
- August 11 at 5:30 p.m.: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Tennessee Williams
- September 15 at 5:30 p.m.: Crimes of the Heart, Beth Henley
- October 12 at 5:30 p.m.: Enchanted April, Elizabeth von Arnim
