Dr. Jessie Gruman, author of AfterShock: What to Do When the Doctor Gives you – or Someone You Love – a Devastating Diagnosis (Walker Publishing, 2006), faced her devastating diagnosis and turned her history into this practical guidebook. Dr. Gruman will share her expertise in finding vital information, and then, how to use that knowledge to make a wise medical decision if faced with a medical challenge. 

Dr. Jessie Gruman, founder and president of the Center for the Advancement of Health, works publicly, privately and voluntarily towards the Center’s objectives to translate health research into effective policy and practice. The goal, specifically, is to ensure that evidence of the influence of social, behavioral and economic factors on health is used in efforts to prevent, manage and treat disease. She received her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and her Ph.D. in social psychology from Columbia University. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Health Council, The Sallan Foundation, The Public Health Institute and The Center for Information Therapy.

Dr. Gruman is a Fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine and has received the Society’s awards for distinguished service and “Leadership in Translation of Research to Practice.” She was honored by Research America for her leadership in advocacy for health research. She is a member or the American Psychological Association, the Society of Behavioral Medicine, The American Psychological Society and the Council on Foreign Relations.
