Two years ago, anthology editor Francisco Aragón presented the work of three poets to highlight the publication of The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry. He returns to share his own work and will be joined by Florida-based poets Rita Maria Martinez and Emma Trelles, who in the past year have published their first books of poetry.

Francisco Aragón is the author of the poetry collection, Puerta del Sol and editor of The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry. His poems and translations have appeared in various anthologies and literary journals. He directs “Letras Latinas,” the literary program of the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He is the editor of the CANTO COSAS book series featuring new Latino and Latina poets and is on the boards of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) and the Guild Complex—a community-based literary organization in Chicago.

Rita Maria Martinez is the author of the poetry collection, Jane-in-the-Box . A graduate of Florida International University’s MFA Creative Writing program, Martinez’s work has appeared in Gulf Stream, Ploughshares, Gargoyle, Diagram, MiPOesias, and Tigertail: A South Florida Poetry Anthology. Her writing is featured in Stephen Minot’s Three Genres: The Writing of Fiction/Literary Nonfiction, Poetry and Drama and in Burnt Sugar, Caña Quemada: Contemporary Cuban Poetry in English and Spanish.  Her poem Saint John Rivers Pops the Question on Jane Eyre was a Pushcart Prize winner in 2008. Martinez is an Academic Services Writing Tutor at Nova Southeastern University.

Emma Trelles is the author of the poetry collection, Little Spells (Goss 183). She is an arts and culture journalist and a Pushcart Prize nominee for poetry. Her poems and essays have been published in literary anthologies, journals, newspapers and magazines such as the Miami Herald, Newsday and Latina. The editor of MiPOesias Magazine’s American Cuban issue, she was a series editor for the Tigertail poetry annuals. The art critic for the Sun-Sentinel for three years, she was a finalist for a Green Eyeshade award for art criticism. She teaches creative writing at the Arts Center of South Florida.
