Read one play a week, dramatizing a confrontation between a private individual and a public entity in which both parties make a moral choice, often with tragic consequences. Plays to be read include Antigone (Sophocles); Julius Caesar (Shakespeare); Billy Budd (Melville); Galileo (Brecht); and A Man for All Seasons (Bolt). Be prepared to read the play and view the film version outside of class, then participate in the conversation!
Charles Pierce received a Ph.D. in English literature from Harvard. He was a Professor of English Literature at Vassar College for 17 years and Director Emeritus of The Morgan Library and Museum in New York for 20 years.
