How to be a Curator: An Introduction
Curators build exhibitions, publish books and catalogues, collect and preserve significant works for posterity, and serve as a voice for art. Whether you are an aspiring curator, would like to better understand and enjoy exhibitions, or simply want to make the pictures in your own home or office come alive, this talk will provide helpful tips and a rare behind the scenes glimpse at what curators do, and why and how they do it.
About Phillip Prodger
Phillip Prodger is Senior Research Scholar at the Yale University Center for British Art, where he specializes in history of photography and works on paper. Formerly Head of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Prodger has held positions at the National Gallery of Canada, Peabody Essex Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, and Stanford University. Prior to receiving his Ph.D. in history of art from Cambridge University, he studied at Stanford and Williams College, and in 2017 received the prestigious Paul Mellon Rome Fellowship, given to one art historian annually.
The author and editor of award-winning books and catalogues including William Eggleston: Portraits, Man Ray | Lee Miller: Partners in Surrealism, and Darwin’s Camera, Prodger’s writings on art and photography have been published in nine languages. He is currently working on a book for Thames & Hudson Publishers called The Real Me: Understanding Photo Portraiture in the Twenty-First Century, and consulting on the creation of a new museum in Southern California.
