Just like all existing biological organisms have evolved from earlier forms of life, so has Western music evolved in the hands of history’s finest composers and performers. The seeds of Western music were planted during antiquity, and by most accounts, began to bear their first fruits during the Baroque era, beginning at the turn of the 17thcentury. The Classical period followed, eventually giving rise to the birth of the Romantic style in the early 19thcentury.
Romantic Evolution, a thematically programmed mini-festival featuring three unique concert programs, is a thrilling exploration of the German and Austrian Romantic traditions as the culmination of centuries of musical development during the Baroque and Classical periods. Each concert program functions as a lens through which to experience the development of the Romantic aesthetic, presenting many of the most important compositions by history’s most celebrated Romantic composers. From Classical masterworks of young Beethoven that foretold the rise of Romanticism, to an in-depth view into Schubert’s individual development as a leader of the movement, to the irreplaceable contributions of Mendelssohn and Brahms, Romantic Evolution promises to tell the extraordinary story of one of the richest periods in the history of the arts.
David Finckel and Wu Han are among the most esteemed and influential classical musicians in the world today. They are recipients of Musical America’s Musicians of the Year award, one of the highest honors granted by the music industry. The talent, energy, imagination, and dedication they bring to their multifaceted endeavors as concert performers, recording artists, educators, artistic administrators, and cultural entrepreneurs go unmatched. Their duo performances have garnered superlatives from the press, public, and presenters alike.
