Max Hollein, son of the celebrated Austrian architect Hans Hollein, has a remarkable record directing museums: following a time at New York’s Guggenheim Museum when it was in its most expansive and visionary period under Thomas Krens, Max Hollein moved to the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and quickly became responsible as well for two other museums there (the Liebieghaus and the Städel Museum). He subsequently became the director of two museums in San Francisco: the de Young and the Legion of Honor. All of this made him uniquely qualified for his appointment in April 2018 as Director of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
